ASA's pre-employment academy
By Geoffrey Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Spatial Analytics
Data is the fuel powering national infrastructure, urban planning, the energy transition, and environmental management. Yet engineering firms, constructors and government agencies face a talent shortage in the geospatial and digital engineering professions. New technical talent with the ability to interpret complex data flows is at a premium, and I believe young neurodivergent Australians can fill this void.
The reality for autistic Australians is tough to understand. Over 50% of unemployed autistic adults have never held a paying job, despite many possessing high-level technical aptitude, exceptional pattern recognition, and acute attention to detail. Overall, the autistic unemployment rate in Australia sits at a staggering 34%.
Mainstream employment services have long struggled to bridge this divide. Under government-contracted employment service provider frameworks, the 26-week employment retention for all jobseekers sits at only 11.7%. Recent reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) mean many young autistic adults are losing access to supports, leaving them at a critical crossroads without a clear bridge into the workforce.
To address this systemic disconnect, Australian Spatial Analytics (ASA) is expanding its proven model. ASA is proud to launch Data Accelerator.
What Data Accelerator is: a purpose-built tech academy for neurodivergent talent
Data Accelerator is Australia’s first neuroinclusive technical training academy built specifically for 'big data' professions. It is an intensive 10-week pre-employment academy designed for young neurodivergent adults aged 18 and over who face severe employment barriers.
We want every neurodivergent person who aspires to a sustainable professional career to have one. Classroom-based learning offers theoretical insight but no practical application. ASA’s Data Accelerator operates as a real-world bridge into industries experiencing skills shortages.
Every participant undertakes a structured curriculum that culminates in dual qualifications validating both technical proficiency and professional workplace readiness. This curriculum includes:
1. ASA Data Accelerator Completion Certificate
• Acknowledging and Applying Workplace Policies
• Fundamentals of Working with Data and AI systems
• Geospatial Technologies Fundamentals
• GIS and Digital Engineering Application across Real World Projects
• Executive Functioning at Work
• Neuroinclusive Communication
• Self-Advocacy at Work
• Recognising Workplace Support and Boundaries
• Learning Reflection and Career Transition
2. Nationally Recognised Certificate II in Workplace Skills (BSB20120) delivered in partnership with a proven and trusted Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
• Core units
o BSBCMM211 Apply communication skills
o BSBOPS201 Work effectively in business environments
o BSBPEF202 Plan and apply time management
o BSBSUS211 Participate in sustainable work practices
o BSBWHS211 Contribute to the health and safety of self and others
• Elective units
o BSBTEC201 Use business software applications
o BSBPEF302 Develop self-awareness
o BSBTWK201 Work effectively with others
o BSBCRT201 Develop and apply thinking and problem-solving skills
o BSBPEF101 Plan and prepare for work readiness
Delivered at ASA’s offices through a gentle-paced, supportive structure, Data Accelerator gives participants an authentic neuro-affirming experience within a professional tech office environment, preparing great people for their ‘big data’ career.
What Data Accelerator does: real-world experience meets wrap-around supports
What makes Data Accelerator unique is its integration of live, complex technical training with comprehensive wrap-around supports. From the first week, participants work on actual project workflows using the same industry-standard software suites applied at ASA, including those relied upon by major geospatial and engineering firms. This technical and workplace readiness training includes:
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS): utilising enterprise platforms like ArcGIS Pro and QGIS to process information layers, mapping data, road networks, and land tenure
• Digital Engineering and Drafting: operating advanced design suites including 12d, Civil3D, Revit, and AutoCAD for critical infrastructure spanning rail, civil construction, and renewable energy
• Data and AI literacy: building foundational competency in data structures and modern artificial intelligence tools
However, technical capability and interest are only part of the equation. ASA’s proven model recognises that long-term career success requires an environment where people are truly seen and feel understood and safe. The program embeds neuroinclusive elements of workplace communication, executive functioning, advocating and managing sensory needs during work hours, setting healthy professional boundaries and building interview confidence towards continued employment transition opportunities.
Central to this is ASA’s Peer Buddy system, which pairs incoming trainees with experienced Junior Data Analysts who have already successfully navigated similar neuro-affirming transitions. As the old saying goes, if you can see it, you can be it.
"Being allowed to learn a new skill in an environment where I am not expected to be neurotypical made it less daunting. It felt like a warm way to introduce myself to a supportive company that understands neurodivergence. Learning self-advocacy was valuable because I learned it’s okay to speak up for what I need. This helped me both at work and in my personal life. Executive functioning strategies, like chunking tasks and initiating work, were great to practice. Getting a chance to do this on the job was really valuable. Taking this leap has made me excited about future job opportunities and new avenues I can pursue."
— Rochelle, former WorkFoundations participant and current ASA Junior Data Analyst in Melbourne
"I was looking for consistency and certainty in my work, including hours and pay. The work at ASA is interesting overall. I’m a big fan of infrastructure and enjoy looking behind the scenes at how things work. It’s good that it’s hands-on training with practical opportunities to apply learning. I can confer with my team and colleagues regularly. I feel it’s okay to ask questions. This experience at ASA gives me options to think about opportunities for future work."
— Ronan, former WorkFoundations candidate and current ASA Junior Data Analyst in Brisbane
This combination of technical rigour and psychological safety has caught the attention of national decision-makers. Key government representatives, including the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, the Hon Amanda Rishworth MP, Sarah Witty MP, and disability advocate Ali France, have visited ASA's offices to witness this impact firsthand and explore how tailored wrap-around supports convert untapped potential into high-value professional outputs.
What Data Accelerator means: rewriting the autistic employment narrative for Australia
The launch of Data Accelerator comes at a defining moment for the Australian employment landscape. As the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) advances its employment services reform process, ASA’s proven model provides a blueprint for people experiencing severe employment barriers.
While traditional employment services have only achieved 26-week retention rates of just over 10%, ASA’s work-integrated social enterprise (WISE) model consistently delivers over 80%. Moving away from large-scale, one-size-fits-all employment services models towards providing tailored wrap-around supports like those provided by Data Accelerator will help create long-term social and economic impact for Australia. The Data Accelerator initiative was catalysed by the success of the Australian Government-funded WorkFoundations Program.
In summary, Data Accelerator means the following for Australia:
• Young neurodivergent adults: it means moving from unemployment and isolation, taking pride in specialised work and empowerment towards a clear career pathway into high-demand STEM careers
• Corporate and philanthropic Australia: it offers an immediate solution to the STEM skills shortage by providing access to a high-performing, pre-vetted talent pipeline while meeting social procurement goals and ESG commitments.
• Government and society: it delivers a powerful social and economic return on investment. Australia could add $43 billion to the economy every single year if that stubborn 34% autistic unemployment rate was reduced by just a third.
Taking the next step
Data Accelerator proves that when young neurodivergent adults are enabled through the right environment, tools, and support, they launch thriving professional careers.
